A wireless mouse connects with the matching wireless receiver ( the matching dongle). Without the dongle, it will not have a connection, unless it uses Bluetooth and your laptop uses Bluetooth. Without the complete model number of the mouse and the laptop, unable to help further. I'm not an HP employee.
